Metung

The picturesque village of Metung is situated on the Gippsland Lakes approximately 20 minutes from Lakes Entrance or 15 minutes from the A1 turning off at Johnsonville.

The Gippsland Lakes is Australia’s largest inland waterway covering 400 square kilometers of lakes, rivers, creeks, bays and backwaters.

Boating has been a major part of this tiny village since the 1880’s as has fishing and the gentle lifestyle that typifies Metung- it is a place that gives you time to recall the simple pleasures of life.

The village is set on a thin arm of land that extends out into the lakes. Water laps the shores on two sides. Bancroft Bay, on one side, bustles with boats, and its southern shore forms part of the Lakes National Parks. On the other side is the sandy Lake King beach very popular beach for the kids to splash about.

The meeting place in Metung is undoubtably the hotel which was built in 1964 replacing the historic original which burnt down in 1953.

Today, you can enjoy a great lunch or dinner or simply have a drink outside under the umbrellas taking in the ambience of the lake. A highlight of your visit to the  hotel is the daily feeding of the Pelicans at lunch time, after lunch why not hire a boat and cruise the Gippsland Lakes at your leisure.

Metung is a foodies delight with a wonderful range of charming eateries offering diverse menus including delish local seafood dishes, local wines and produce. Have a family barbecue on the village green or relax by the water with local fish and chips.

Accommodation in Metung caters for all tastes and budgets from basic camping to 5 star luxury – there is nowhere in the world like Metung.

Metung and Nungurner  are home to some of Australia’s leading artists. Fine art galleries, studios and craft centres are a must visit if you are visiting the area.
